Mitochondrial Dysfunction and Function in Autism

Reseach in autism clinics and scientific studies show that there are many underlying causes of autism.  These factors and the environment effect genes that may predispose an individual to manifesting symptoms and behaviors of autism.  When your mitochondria are not working right, the energy necessary for the brain to work right, this mitochondrial dysfunction will lead to underfunctioning and malfunctioning of the brain.  This is often overlooked in the typical doctor visit related to autism.  However, there are clear clinical proofs of the positive turn-around of children with autism when the mitochondrial dysfunction is addressed.

Mitochondrial Dysfunction and Function in Autism

Of course, there are other factors proven to be related to autism and how to mitigate and even reverse it. Besides mitochondrial Dysfunction and Autism, there are other things that must be looked at in a comprehensive approach. Such as the intestinal flora, mold overgrowth, damage due to repeated antibiotic use, deficiencies in various vitamins and minerals, food allergies, fight or flight system overactivity, brain-gut inflammation factors, environmental toxins, and structural issues such as meningeal compression.

At The Redwood Clinic we look at all these factors (including mitochondrial Dysfunction and Autism) in a comprehensive fashion when helping our patients with brain-related dysfunction and related behaviors.

Hyperactivity & Attention Deficit Disorder: Do We Have Options?

BANKING ON TRUMP – The Formation of TEAM TRUMP

BANKING ON TRUMP – The Formation of TEAM TRUMP

Do you ever read newspapers?  Or the independent newspaper call EPOCH TIMES?

I know, FACEBOOK is supposedly purging “fake news” and you might be thinking that EPOCH TIMES is fake news.  Well, not so far as I can tell.

The most recent paper (yes, made of real paper!, from a box on the street) edition (November 24-30, 2016; Northern California Edition) has a picture of Donald Trump in the Oval Office behind the desk.

BANKING on TRUMPAt first I thought maybe this was a past cover from THE ONION.  But no, just a projection (photo-shopped) into the future.  Not fake news.  Not even with a satirical spin like my much-beloved THE ONION so masterfully created.

Thus, after the front page photo, what really caught my attention was the article title, “–THE FORMATION OF– TEAM TRUMP.”  And then the lead in to the story.

BANKING ON TRUMP – The Formation of TEAM TRUMP

Why did it catch my attention?  Because what it said was what I was predicting over a year ago.

When I first started studying the presidential candidates from the perspective of B.A.N.K. code personality (behavior and values) typing, what I saw wasBANKING on TRUMP so obvious to me that I was motivated to write a whole book about it.  CODE BLUE IN THE WHITE HOUSE: What Successful Presidents Sell Voters to Win Elections.

Chapters 7 to 9 delve into this B.A.N.K. Code personality and character stuff in depth.  Please buy the book and read the details.  www.CodeBlueInTheWhiteHouse.com.

The gist of it is that everyone saw (and still sees) the essence of Donald Trump as being an almost purely ACTION type. All about Image, Fun, Winning, Competition.

Act first, think later.

He had a certain “charisma” or at least “attention grabbing” style. But without the balancing characteristics that create substance, details, programs, action plans.   Not like the BLUEPRINT and KNOWLEDGE types.  And none of the “let me be of service to others” exemplified by the NURTURING type.

Now, in contrast, Hillary Clinton was more the BLUEPRINT and KNOWLEDGE TYPE according to most people. More about policy and programs than about glitz and showbiz, image and WIFM.  And yet, I felt that she was as exciting a candidate as Al Gore and Ross Perot. You get my point. NOT charismatic.  But not floating in the air with platitudes.  Or unintelligible like the first endorser of Donald Trump, the undeniable Sara Palen.

Many people might disagree a little with this, but the results of my research across 3 continents was consistent. Donald was 98% of the time spotted as an ACTION type. Hillary’s predominant BANK Code personality type was more muddled and mixed in people’s analysis. “What is she….?” they would often ponder.

People usually made a quick decision to chose ACTION as Donald Trump. (ACTIONs are quick decision makers).  They would take a long time to decide on Hillary’s primary code.

BANKING ON TRUMP – The Formation of TEAM TRUMP

SO, finally getting back to the article from EPOCH TIMES, here is what it says and why B.A.N.K. Code is such a powerful and reliable system to predict behavior.

“According to an adage….personnel is policy. In order for a president to deliver on specific policies, people who believe in those policies need to be appointed.” After discussing  Trump’s lack of governmental experience and mostly being an outsider attacking the establishment, the article goes on to say “his grasp of policy details and ability to articulate what he wants to achieve has been a work in progress, leaving room for friends and critics to imagine different versions of what a Trump presidency might deliver.”

Precisely the point I made (or at least implied) in CODE BLUE IN THE WHITE HOUSE: What Successful Presidents Sell Voters to Win Elections.

Precisely what I said above about an ACTION.

In other words, what was Donald saying during the campaign? Besides “build a wall,” “make America great again” (#MAGA), and “I’ll create more jobs” (did he ever say jobs for Americans? We know that it is more jobs for his family members….), he mostly provided fodder for comedians.

Because Donald Trump lacked substantive details.  That is why he made up stuff as he went along and denied details and facts even more than Hillary Clinton did.  Because there were no details behind Donald Trump as an ACTION.  No policies. No substance.  Just a lot of negative blaming and name-calling and empty promises that have evaporated now more quickly than when he proclaimed them before.

B.A.N.K. Code and Individual Balance

Thanksgiving tips for PositivityAll four personality BANK Code types are found in us all as individuals.  The amounts of each vary, just as all pies may have similar basic ingredients but the variety and flavor can be radically different based on the proportions of what is used, how the crust is made, and how the filling is prepared.

The next big question is: how long can a Trump Presidency survive when Donald’s ADHD behavior leads him to become bored with the details of the real job? Then, his real goal of the presidency, to use it for personal gain, becomes overwhelmingly obvious to those who voted him in.

And how will this then effect the health of this country and the world as a whole?  We will see. we will see. Continue reading

Hyperactivity & Attention Deficit Disorder: Do We Have Options?

Hyperactivity & Attention Deficit Disorder: Do We Have Options?

Guest Author: Ronald Grisanti D.C., D.A.B.C.O.,D.A.C.B.N., MS

Attention-deficit disorder affects a startling 17 million people and seems to be gaining ground every year.

As a parent of child suffering with this disorder.. what are you to do?? Attention-deficit disorder is the most frequently diagnosed childhood psychiatric condition in America. In the past most medical journals described this disorder as minimal brain damage, hyperactive child syndrome & minimal cerebral dysfunction.

The common symptoms include brief attention span, poor concentration, difficulty keeping track of things, making careless mistakes, impatience, difficulty waiting or taking turns, blurting out answers when not asked, impulsiveness, hyperactivity, failure to finish things off, lack of perseverance & poor organizing. These characteristics are frequently associated with difficulties in school, in both learning and behavior. Task that require concentration are nearly impossible causing frustration, irritability, agitation and often recklessness.

There are three types of ADHD: Inattentive, predominately hyperactivity and combined type. Girls are more prevalent to exhibit the symptom of inattentiveness, whereby boys tend to be more hyperactive. As a child with undiagnosed ADHD becomes a teenager, he/she may become involved in drugs and crime and will commonly drop out of school. In adulthood the predominant features are failure to complete tasks, disorganization, difficulty paying attention and difficulty beginning tasks.

Conventional Medical Treatment

The conventional medical treatment for ADHD is almost always pharmaceutical drugs such as methylphenidate (Ritalin) or or the amphetamine Adderall. A review in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry notes that two antidepressants — bupropion and venlafaxine — are now being used as an alternative. “Talk therapy” is often recommended in conjunction with prescription medication for ADHD.

Alternative Medical Treatment:

The causes of ADHD are many and it would serve your child well for the parents to investigate the possible underlying factors that could very-well be causing the condition.

The Functional Medicine Approach looks at the triggers of ADHD. People with ADHD often have impaired digestion, environmental and food sensitivities, nutritional insufficiencies, heavy metal toxicities, fatty acid and amino acid imbalances, sensitivity to food additives and sucrose (sugar). Some studies indicate a possible genetic predisposition. Children with ADHD usually have histories of more ear infections (otitis media) than other children with learning problems.

It is unfortunate that many people who have children suffering with ADHD are not informed of all the options. I must agree that prescription medications such as Ritalin and Adderall can make a significant impact on the symptoms of ADHD. A child who once was inattentive is now focused and doing well in school. Who can ask for anything better?!! But, are you being told everything? What are the long-term health risk for your child?

Studies done on children taking Ritalin using a PET scan revealed that although the children had a reduction in their symptoms the PET scan was highly abnormal.

Most physicians are trained to treat ADHD with amphetamine-like drugs. But nutritionally oriented physicians have known for a long time that food allergy is a primary cause. The first major scientific study to show the link between food allergy and hyperactivity appeared in a 1985 issue of Lancet, a prestigious international medical journal. Dr. J. Egger, head of a pediatric university hospital in Munich, and Dr. J Soothill, London, England, studied the effect of food on 76 hyperactive children. 79% had clear improvement in their mental activity, emotions and behavior and 28 became completely normal. To prove their findings, the researchers reintroduced the allergenic foods to the children and their hyperactive symptoms returned.

The following have been linked to ADD:
•Food sensitivities
•Heavy metal toxicity especially lead has been linked to attention deficit and learning problems. Dr. H.L. Needlemen of the University of Pittsburgh Medical School has conducted scores of studies over the last 20 years clearly establishing the link between lead levels in children and specific hyperactive and attention deficit behavior traits. Follow-up studies indicate that these effects often persist into adulthood.
•Fatty acid deficiency
•Amino acid imbalances
•Methylation dysfunction
•Intestinal dysbiosis
•to name a few

Dr. Grisanti’s Comment:

I would have to say that I have not met a parent who did not want the best for their child. The parent who is struggling with what to do to help their child, faces a major dilemma. Should you medicate your child or take the road less traveled and identify the underlying cause of your child’s problem. Realize you have two sides of this sensitive issue. On one hand you have your family physician who insist that pharmaceutical drugs is the only way to go and offers no real alternative. And on the other hand, the volumes of medical research is quite over-whelming in favor of looking for the root cause(s) of your child’s condition.

Dr. Jay Sordean’s Comment:

“In Defense of Food” – Michael Pollan

Michael Pollan “In defense of Food”

Michael Pollan (#MichaelPollan) has recently come out with a new documentary movie and a new book called “In defense of Food.” (#InDefenseofFood) The documentary movie will be coming out locally at 9:00 PM Wednesday, December 30 on KQED. A long review article was written by David Weigand In the San Francisco Chronicle Monday, December 28, 2015,  It is a review of the basic concepts inmichael pollan the book and an outline of the movie apparently.  As a big fan of Michael Pollan’s books, I enjoyed the article and the basic premise that Pollan “simply makes a case for eating right,” “eating food” — and not something that is manufactured.

The article has a brief overview of the different trends and
official recommendations since the fifties regarding proper nutrition. These recommendations are related to the mass production of consumables by the food manufacturing industry. There is a review of no- and low-fat diets, the injection of vitamins into manufactured foods, the creation of trans fatty acids, and the massive amounts of sugar and salt in processed foods.
The bottom line suggestions in the article are “eat only foods that will eventually rot. Avoid foods advertised on television. Eat food that has been cooked by humans. If it’s made from a plant, eat it; if it was made in a plant, don’t….There is no single food whose consumption or avoidance will answer our dietary prayers.”

To the degree that this article or Michael Pollan’s book goes, these are certainly good ideas and advice. But they don’t go far enough. It is naïve to say that that simply eating foods will correct the imbalances that our bodies currently have. The proliferation of toxins in the environment —

Pouring Mercury

and consequently in our bodies, cannot be addressed simply by eating “food.” To address health issues it is necessary that each person have a carefully performed, individualized evaluation of functional capacities. Then there must be creation of a targeted remediation program that includes: detoxification, repair, and then replacement to address the years of exposure to processed foods and environmental chemicals.

chemical toxins in environmentThe nutritional deficits that lead to damaged tissue structures, like in the intestine, must be corrected along with other deficits, and just eating food, even if it is all strictly organic, is not enough for most people. The damage is too extensive to fix without intensive action.
This is where the experience of clinicians such as Dr. Jay Sordean come into the picture. Looking at the big picture as well as the details, taking into account traumas, toxicity, stress and structural issues – all of which play a role in the breakdown and positive repair of the body, mind, emotions and spirit.  This functional diagnostic medicine approach is lacking in your hospitals and most clinics.  Its absence is a reason why chronic illness and epidemics (diabetes, ADHD, autism, dementia, obesity, to name a few major ones) are prevalent in America today.  Dr. Jay’s series on issues such as functional causes of obesity and on female hormone imbalances are worth watching to understand why “just food” isn’t enough.  Time to call for an appointment 510-849-1176
